The Beauty of Blue and White

You see these pictures of the Greek Isles in magazines, on Instagram with flying dress ladies, and you might think: someone must be good at Photoshop. The reality of the situation is that Photoshop (gasp) is just plain not necessary. It is that gorgeous.

We had planned to visit the Greek Isles in May 2020 for our birthdays...and we know how 2020 went. So, rescheduling once the country reopened to vaccinated travelers, we set the date. I have a silent auction problem as all my acquaintances know. It is a good problem for me, however, because I tend to buy vacations at auction, helping both charity and my wanderlust issues. This particular trip was purchased through AmFund (they organize trips worldwide won at auction).

I will start off by saying that good travel agents with pricey trips will put out feelers to see what kind of voyage you are accustomed to and what things are needs and wants. For this company, this took a bit of prodding on my part as they seemed more in tune with planning itineraries for older folks with less of a desire to actually experience culture. In saying this, I ended up doing so much research into each place that I probably should have just booked it by myself. Alas, this is our journey.

  1. Santorini: the island of blue, white, assyrtiko grapes, pistachios on trees, pomegranates. We spent 4 days here, which is probably enough (although I wanted more time)

  2. Mykonos: the Ibiza of Greece during high season but shockingly chill in the off season before literally everyone leaves for the winter. We spent 4 days here as well, which also seemed to be enough

  3. Athens: most people will tell you to go for 2 days and bail as it is a big city with big city complications. I really wanted additional time here, however, and will outline what we did and what I would have done

  4. Crete: Grecian mythology buffs, hikers, lovers of wine...this is a must. My main regret here is that the agent booked us at a resort that was all inclusive (barf. I hate all inclusive other than free bar trips) The place was beautiful for scenery, however. We spent 3 days here and I could have added a week

My posts will be separated by day to really give as many recommendations as possible. Enjoy, Yamas!
