Foot Tracks on Sand

Maspalomas and Puerto Rico

On the southern tip of Gran Canaria is a town known for their dunes and isolated desert scenery...all within a km walk to the fancy hotels. When you are staring into the expanse of of the dunes, it really seems isolating, like a camel should just wander by and say hello. Actually, you CAN ride a camel, but I don't like sneezing so I skipped that.

The route to Puerto Rico and Maspalomas is a direct shot down the main eastern highway, and the signage is great so it is really hard to get lost. Maspalomas is lined with cute shops, restaurants, a variety of guest houses, but the main attraction is the dunes. Maspalomas is also a very inclusive destination and is LGBT friendly which is a bonus.

The Dunes are free unless you want to ride camels. Bring your water because things seem closer than they are. The sand is soft, but hot, so barefoot is not a great idea. The winds can fill your bag with sand in about 20 seconds so bring a backpack that zips!

I had lunch at a little seaside shack in Puerto Rico watching the pirate tours go out. The day was really relaxing overall.
